We are Don & Lorna McLean, two middle-aged professionals (are you really middle aged these days in your 50’s?) from Glasgow, Scotland, with three amazing grown-up children who are now making their own way in a busy  and challenging world with their partners in life.

What were we about?

We were about bringing up our family giving them time, patience and energy, and treating them as the individuals they are (they did eventually leave home…..)

We were about to consider winding down and retiring, enjoying 2 (or 3) supposedly well-earned holidays a year, and enjoying our self-built house in a cosy suburb.

We were about heavy involvement in our local church and organisations such as Street Pastors, which gave us a lot of satisfaction and a certain level of comfort that we were broadly in the right place doing the right things.

We were about mission to our local community and in the workplace, demonstrating Jesus’ love to our friends and neighbours, being firmly of the opinion that mission didn’t always mean going overseas, but at its core, was about relationships, integrity, love.

……..Actually, we are still about a lot of these things (guess which), but in September 2014 everything changed for us when God spoke directly into our lives, giving us the heads-up on a huge shift to come in our circumstances and persuading us that He still had specific stuff for us to do. In so many ways since then, as we have taken steps to follow Him, He has pointedly directed us to a life less ordinary, a life of distinct service far from the comforts of our previously familiar and predictable life!

So now, we are about…..listening……and obedience, as we step by step seek to follow where He is leading us, no matter the cost! At the moment that’s South Africa, to work with others who have gone before, seeking to alleviate the worst effects of the legacy of apartheid.

What we really want now in serving our Father is no different than before, but how He intends to use us has come as a complete surprise!

We realise now, looking back, that God has been preparing us for this for a few years now. In particular He has been trying to get through to us via Romans 8, and in particular verses 15-17 (The Message):

‘This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life. It’s adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike “What’s next Papa?” God’s Spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are. We know who he is, and we know who we are: Father and children. And we know we are going to get what’s coming to us – an unbelievable inheritance! We go through exactly what Christ goes through. If we go through the hard times with him, then we’re certainly going to go through the good times with him!’

Papa, we’re listening……
